It’s the last new show of the year, and we came…totally unprepared. Ryan honors GTA bet with Dan; is no longer the object of scorn
DECEMBER 5, 2008, SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO: In a stunning turn of events, KOXM podcast host Ryan McCaffrey went to the ATM and got $20 with the express intent of paying off his long-standing bet with KOXM co-host Dan Amrich. The bet, which was made over the eventual release date of Grand Theft Auto IV, was made on Episode 93, late December of 2007. Just 51 weeks later, Ryan handed over a portrait of Andrew Jackson to settle the bet.
“It took him more than fifty episodes to make good, but make good he did,” said Amrich. “However, with the magic of compound interest, he actually now owes me $138.73.”
“I just wanted people to stop harassing me,” growled McCaffrey. “The listeners started to send me rude messages. Knock it off. I paid him. It’s over.”
To celebrate, Amrich said he planned to do something frivolous and stupid with the money, such as buying four copies of Space Giraffe on Xbox Live Arcade.

Our guest this week is Valve Software’s Chet Faliszek, one of the chief minds behind The Best Zombie Game of All-Time (barely edging out Dead Rising), a.k.a. Left 4 Dead. Chet tells us about Valve’s magic voodoo sauce, what kind of content future updates to the game might bring, and even if Valve might be working on a Premium Theme for the New Xbox Experience. We’re all too happy to shout out our love for the first-person parkour thriller Mirror’s Edge from the rooftops as it releases this week. To celebrate, we interview senior producer Owen O’Brien, who gives a refreshingly candid and interesting interview that touches on the challenges of developing an “outside the box” kind of game, releasing a new IP in the most crowded time of the year, why in-game heroine Faith doesn’t have double-D breasts, and a whole lot more.
